After a gunman opened fire, security procedures were put in place. The UT university has been shut down for safety. Either one or two gunmen started firing weapons in the Perry-Castaneda library early in the morning. The assault was an evident suicide. The shooter only killed themselves. The university and areas around UT-Austin are locked down to keep students and residents safe.
UT shooters
A masked shooter walked into the Perry-Castaneda library at UT-Austin. This was just as morning classes were starting. There are conflicting reports as to if there were one or two shooters. Wearing a ski mask and wielding an assault rifle, possibly an AK-47, the shooter ran across campus to the library. There was a short burst of gunfire, and then the shooter allegedly shot himself. Because some witnesses have reported a second shooter, police are nevertheless looking for that second person.
UT shooting injures only one
The UT-Austin firing has resulted in just one fatality. The shooter was the person that died. An adjunct professor and student who encountered the University of Texas gunman reported that he appeared to be shooting into the ground, not at individuals. SWAT teams have been called to the UT, as have all emergency services.
Students quickly informed of campus lockdown
As soon as officials found out about the firing, students were informed. A full lockdown was put in effect. E-mail and text message alerts were sent out to students telling them to lock doors and don’t leave their building. Students who were off the UT campus were told to “STAY AWAY.” The lockdown of campus will continue until the emergency crews have confirmed that campus is safe.
